British Values

Introduction

At Wroughton Primary Academies, we are committed to serving our diverse community and preparing our students for their future roles in society. We recognize the multi-cultural, multi-faith, and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom and follow equal opportunities guidance to ensure no discrimination against any individual or group. Our dedication to promoting and reinforcing British values is integral to our educational approach.

Core British Values

The five fundamental British values we emphasize are:

  1. Democracy
  2. The Rule of Law
  3. Individual Liberty
  4. Mutual Respect
  5. Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

How We Teach British Values

Democracy

Democracy is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Each year, children participate in deciding their class rules and the rights associated with them. We have an active school council where students can voice their opinions and contribute to school decisions. This involvement helps them understand the democratic process and the importance of having a say in their community.

The Rule of Law

The significance of laws is consistently reinforced throughout the school day, during assemblies, and in behavior management. Students learn the reasons behind laws, their protective role, and the responsibilities and consequences associated with them. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service further reinforce this understanding.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to make choices within a safe and supportive environment. By providing clear boundaries, we help students exercise their rights and personal freedoms safely. This is integrated into our e-Safety and Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) lessons, where children learn to make informed choices in various aspects of their lives.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our school values. We teach children that their behavior impacts their own rights and the rights of others. All members of our school community are expected to treat each other with respect, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We actively promote tolerance through our curriculum and assemblies, which include stories and celebrations from various faiths and cultures. This helps students appreciate and respect the diverse society they are part of.

Integration in Daily School Life

British values are not only taught in specific lessons and assemblies but are woven into every aspect of school life at Wroughton Academies. From classroom activities to school-wide events, these values underpin our educational practices and community interactions. This holistic approach ensures that our students are well-prepared to contribute positively to their local community, Britain, and the wider world.
