EAL
At Wroughton Academies, we are dedicated to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all our pupils, including those for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL). We recognise the unique challenges and opportunities that come with learning in a new language, and we have developed a comprehensive approach to support our EAL learners. Our EAL support is built on the following key principles:
High Expectations with Appropriate Support
We maintain high expectations for all our pupils, including those using EAL. Our teachers and support staff set challenging goals that inspire and motivate EAL learners while providing the necessary language support to help them access the curriculum. We understand that EAL pupils face the dual task of learning English while also learning through English, and we tailor our support accordingly.
Integrated Focus on Content and Language
Our curriculum is designed to integrate English language development within subject content. This approach allows EAL learners to develop their language skills while engaging with the same rich academic content as their peers. We provide language-rich mainstream classes where English language development is embedded across all subjects.
Effective and Holistic Assessment
We use a comprehensive assessment approach to build a broad picture of each EAL learner. This includes:
- Initial diagnostic assessments to gather linguistic and educational information
- Assessment of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
- Continuous formative assessments to track both English language development and subject-specific learning
This holistic assessment allows us to plan appropriate and targeted support for each pupil.
Social Inclusion
We believe that including EAL pupils and their families in all aspects of school life is crucial for their wellbeing and motivation. We strive to:
- Create an inclusive culture where EAL pupils participate fully in school life
- Encourage mixed-language friendship groups
- Build respectful relationships with families and the wider community
- Provide accessible communication to promote family involvement
Additional Support Measures
To further support our EAL learners, we offer:
- Specialist EAL teaching support within mainstream classes
- Small group interventions for targeted language development
- Resources and materials adapted to support language acquisition
- Professional development for all staff to effectively support EAL pupils
At Wroughton Academies, we celebrate linguistic diversity and recognise the valuable contributions that our EAL pupils bring to our school community. We are committed to ensuring that all our pupils, regardless of their language background, have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
